DIY wedding centerpieces?

DeeDee posted:

The wedding is in October, the tables are long, the evening reception. Wanted to know of any Web site (in addition to Michaels arts) creative arts to take the wedding to do. Also I will not make the centerpiece of the typical wedding with a glass bowl and floating candles on top of rocks, so please don 't suggest that more =)

My fiance and I were kicking around the idea of just having a little goldfish in a small fishbowl, on top of a mirror platform, at every table. It’s way more fun than flowers, and then at the end of the night we can give them away as favors to a few people.

Not sure of websites, beside the knot.com which has lots of different ones. But we are doing (late September) pictures in place card holders on each end, with a votive on each side of the picture. Not sure what we are putting in the center of the table, possibly hurricanes with some fall centered thing. Then we are spreading leaves out as like a runner on the table…

I would look on the knot to see pictures to may be spark your creativity - I found some really cool original ideas on there that I used :) for example - evening reception at the beach, we used sand dollars as place cards…

we found some cute funky flower vases and put tons of bright colored fish in them. the kids loved looking at them and they were so fun. I actually had people asking me what i was doing with them after and i gave them out to all the kids and they loved it! We also had random little picture frames with funny pictures of us. They were fun but still classy and tied in with the rest of the wedding.

If you want to save money, you could use the bridemaid’s bouquets as centerpieces during the reception! Just have empty vases set up on the tables, and after the ceremony, have someone take the bouquets and drop them into the empty vases before the reception starts!

I always like that idea because usually the bouquets are so pretty, and don’t get showcased enough. Usually there’s not much use for them after the ceremony - and it’s very cost effective!

Also, a friend of mine did something really cool. She went to Ikea and bought a ton of sets of drinking glasses, all the same shape but different heights, and bought a ton of candles. She had about 10-15 glasses in the center of each table with a different sized candle in each glass, and then surrounded them with lots and lots of flower petals. It gave the room a really nice ambiance, looked very elegant, and didn’t cost a lot.

I love the look of long cylinder vases filled with fruit. You lust pick fruits that match your color scheme. I really love the way limes or pears look. Its affordable and pretty.

I have two favorite ideas. One is to create wreaths with candles in the center, and sprinkle silk leaves around them. The other is antique lanterns placed on mirrors with mini tea lights surrounding them.

Just off the top of my head from the research I have done there are some cute ideas:

    1. Find some baskets (you can find them on sale all the time) and just lie some fresh flowers in them or some potpourri or just some basket grass and you could put your favors in it. There are tons of options here.

    2. Buy some picture frames (you can always dress them up yourself) and use baby pictures or pictures of you and your fiancee to decorate the tables. That and a bud vase or a tall pillar candle would be beautiful but meaningful.

    3. Just look around for different things you can buy. For my sister in law’s wedding we found a set of 3 glass candle holders (they were all different sizes) and we bought some glass beads and just used some candles-I know this example is not exactly what you want but you never know what you will find when you are looking.

    Good Luck

    *Cornicopia with fruit/folliage

*A variety of ‘Fall’ themed centerpieces

    *Coffee/Candle combo

*Could use wreaths in this style and place pillar candles in the center

I dont know if this helps, but my wedding is in october as well, and we are keeping it simple, but i think all in all it will be pretty. The center piece is a hurricane with a taper candle in the center, surrounding that i will be adding 4 votive candles, and scattered among them will be (fake) autumn leaves. The table cloths are going to be champaign and the napkins are chocolate. It will incorporate all the colors of fall that i need.
Now there was this other idea that a lady gave me, and that would have been to add Ribbon across the center of the table, possibly about 3 inches or so thik, instead of table runners.. I was going to do this but i think it will be to much on the table if i do. But i thought it was a great idea, and a lot cheaper then table runners.

Well hope i helped a little.
Best of luck to you. I know what a headache it can be to pick out this stuff and finalize a decision.

Don’t do a centerpiece. I have found that all a centerpiece does is take up table room, obscure the view, and prevent conversation across the table.
